• Not just desserts. Get creative to ensure an exceptional ending to the meal. A growing trend among Columbus couples is to make the cake an expression of your own interests and personalities. It could be a whimsical Dr. Seuss cake, a theme-oriented confection re-creating Ohio Stadium or a tower of cupcakes, each topped with the bride's favorite flower (edible, of course).
• Appearance isn't everything. Dessert has to taste good, too. Today's cakes are a mouthwatering lesson in baking creativity: chocolate/raspberry truffle torte, apple walnut spice cake with orange buttercream filling, vanilla chiffon cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, cinnamon mocha cream cake, cheesecake with cherries and berries, Italian cream cake with chocolate ganache.
• Set the timer. Since creating a lavish wedding cake is such a time-consuming endeavor, most bakers can complete just a couple of cakes per weekend. Experts say it's not unusual for brides to book a baker six months or more in advance.
